You always don’t get what you wish for. You get what you work for!

A lot of students sit up straight and alert when they hear the words “mistakes to avoid”. If any of these ring a bell somewhere, this write up is just the thing you ought to read and while your mind digests the content, you also get to learn about the ‘do nots’ while gearing up for IIT:

  • Slipping into minor computation lapses
  • Not remembering to record positive or negative counts
  • Ignoring errors
  • Passing over to take care of FOIL or priority of activities
  • Other seemingly slight constituents

In majority of the cases, these errors are a lot more annoying since you realized the notion and you brainstormed through the obstacle and charted your plan of action and you were sure that you had everything in place, except a silly mistake. This is the reason we call them silly mistakes.

Not to worry! All we need is a bit of contemplation and emphasis, to do away with these errors.

We all commit mistakes. Nevertheless, our success is determined by the learning that we absorb from those mistakes and the caution that we exercise of never repeating the same ones. The key is to allow mistakes of different sorts to happen during practice sessions, get clarity on all of them and never forget any of them. To avoid them in the future, we need to learn from them and keep them as far as possible to get as close as possible to success.

Let us take a look at the common mistakes which we can and should avoid while organizing ourselves for IIT.

  1. Looking up an excessive number of reference books: Too many reference books are like too many cooks in one kitchen. No matter what, these study material can in no way be substituted by any coaching faculties or class writings for your IIT groundwork. Despite that using more than the required number of reference books can lead you to a confusion of sorts and leave you overwhelmed with an overabundance of unresolved queries in your mind. An increased number of reference books also have the tendency to make revision a tough task, as and when the big day approaches. Rather, reduce the amount of reference material, but select the most appropriate and best ones. If time permits once the syllabus is covered, it is definitely advisable to practise. However, for the initial finishing up of the syllabus, definitely stick to the lesser-in-number, but better-in-quality reference books.
  2. Getting irritated with the tedious routine: This in no way should serve as a deterrent to anyone, but the avenues to IIT are not always bright and sunny. These two years are punctuated by highs and lows. An aspirant’s lifestyle comprises studying, eating and sleeping. Often, it is likely to get a bit bland. As a result, it’s is highly vulnerable to frustration and dotted with temptations to change tracks. This is the time when it is a challenge to adhere to your goal; a matter of just a couple of years. There are moments of delight, gloom and jabs of annoyance. You just need to sail through it all. The prize that follows after these 2 years will be a perfect bonus for all the labour that you have put in.
  3. Keeping aside questions till the calculation phase: This is one of the most dangerous mistakes that anyone can make. Here too, the overall belief is that the journey is smooth now, calculation can wait. We can overlook it at this stage; this will save time for more questions now. Keeping the consistency factor in mine, it is always better to do fewer questions along with the calculations instead of doing more questions without them. This will enhance your speed and at the same time, hone your accuracy.
  4. Scheduling a rigid timetable: Wake up, Eat, Start Studying, Revise, Eat, Study More, Eat, Sleep. If reading this can be frustrating, imagine the actual! This is exactly what you should ‘not do’ to your timetable. Study when you feel like and furthermore, what you feel like. Now do not confuse this with studying the entire day. Instead, study sensibly and abstain from the monotones in the course of your training. Take time off for watching television. Take a physical recreation break, which can be a leisurely walk or a game. Essentially, relish some energetic entertainment alternating two lengthy sittings of study.
  5. Shying away from revisiting your mistakes: Fear is very detrimental to success. It always helps to prepare beforehand, for a test. Many of us avoid evaluation of our papers simply because of the fear of having committed some ridiculous mistake. Always be keen on facing your mistakes, because only then you will be able to overcome them. Assess every single question for a mistake that might have been overlooked. The irony is that running away from mistakes causes mistakes to run towards you. They will pop up all over.

Always remember that all your endeavours, studying theories and dedicated practice in the last two years will aggregate to your performance in the exam. Get a good night’s sleep the night before the exam, have a good meal to invigorate you for the day and stay clear of eleventh-hour jitters. These are the things to bear in mind and turn up for your exam with a cool and confident disposition, and just put in the best you have!
