About NTSE Exam
The NTSE exam identifies students through a two-tier examination process-
– Stage I: The first stage exam is a state-level examination. It is conducted by all the States and Union Territories of India.
– Stage II: Those who qualify Stage I will be eligible to sit for the Stage II exam. It is a National level examination conducted by the National Council of Educational Research (NCERT). NTSE scholarship will be conferred on the basis of the overall performance of students in both the stages of the examination.
NTSE Scholarships
Scholarships are provided at each stage of education.
• A scholarship of Rs. 1250/- per month is provided to Class XI and Class XII.
• A scholarship of Rs. 2000/- per month is provided to undergraduates and postgraduates.
• The scholarship amount is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms for PhD.
NTSE Eligibility Criteria
For a candidate to be eligible to take NTSE, they must fulfill the following criteria:
NTSE Eligibility Criteria for Stage I (State level examination)
o The candidate must be a Class X student from any Government/ Private school in India.
o The candidate can be from any State/Union Territory of India.
o The candidates studying in open or distance learning are also eligible to write NTSE, provided they are below 18 years of age, not employed and are appearing for Class X board examination for the first time.
NTSE Eligibility Criteria for Stage II (National level examination)
o Only students who manage to clear NTSE Stage I will be eligible for NTSE Stage II examination.
NTSE Exam Pattern
The NTSE question paper is segregated into two sections- Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
• Mental Ability Test (MAT): Test a student’s ability to problem-solving and reasoning skills. The questions in this section are designed to judge the ability to think, judge, evaluate, visualize in space, etc.
• Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): Contain questions from Science, Mathematics and Social Sciences.
NTSE is a pen-and-paper based (offline) test. The questions are of MCQ type with 4 alternatives per question. Candidates will be awarded +1 for a correct answer. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Candidates are given 4 hours to complete the paper.
