All 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will make use of the National Credit Framework (NCrF). This decision was made at a meeting of the IIT Council on April 18, 2023 at IIT Bhubaneswar. During its 55th meeting, the IIT council also decided to make it easier for students to earn, transfer, and accumulate credits.
The National Credit Framework: What is it?
The National Credit system is described as a thorough credit system that includes primary, secondary, postsecondary, and vocational education and training. Along with incorporating applicable experience, competency, and professional levels, the comprehensive framework also incorporates creditization of learning across multiple dimensions, including academics, vocational skills, and experiential learning.
“The National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes the merging of general (academic) education with vocational education in order to make education more holistic and successful. The government established a high-level committee, which included representatives from the UGC, AICTE, NCVET, NIOS, CBSE, NCERT, DGT, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Skill Development, according to UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar. To fulfil this vision, a national system of credit accumulation and transfer is necessary.
Positive aspects of the National Credit Framework
The NCrF is the first organization to include school instruction inside a credit framework. It has separated the learning environment into eight levels and awards credits based on study hours.
The IIT Council made a wise choice when it decided to adopt the national credit framework since it will improve the equivalence of credits earned in general (academic), technical, and skill- and vocational-education programs. According to the UGC chairperson, doing so will “encourage the rest of the higher education system to adopt and implement the national credit framework, bringing a unified inclusive meta framework across the country.”
The IIT Council oversees the administrative and other important matters at the IITs and serves as the top coordination body for all 23 of the top engineering institutes. Each of the 23 IITs is represented by a director and chair.
