The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced significant changes to the Class 10 curriculum in an effort to lessen the strain on students in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak. Notably, the CBSE science textbooks no longer include chapters on evolution, the periodic table of elements, or energy sources. This choice has spurred discussions about the possible effects of such changes among educators and students. We will go into great depth about these changes and their effects in this blog.

Reformulating the Curriculum:

NCERT has conducted a quick rationalization of the Class 10th syllabus in response to the issues the pandemic has created. As a result, numerous chapters were not covered during this time, and their exclusion from the textbooks was decided. This action aims to lessen the amount of content that students must learn and to improve the learning process.

Updated Science Curriculum:

“Periodic Classification of Elements” (Chapter 5), “Sources of Energy” (Chapter 14), and “Sustainable Management of Natural Resources” (Chapter 16) are among the chapters from the science textbooks for Class 10 CBSE that have been left out. Despite some people’s concerns, it’s crucial to remember that kids who choose chemistry as a topic in Classes 11 and 12 will still have the opportunity to study it in depth. The periodic table chapter was removed from the textbook.

Evolutionary Concepts Altered:

The removal of chapters on evolution and inheritance from the science curriculum is one of the notable alterations. The origin of life on Earth, human evolution, and inheritance as they relate to Charles Darwin will no longer be included in the science textbooks for Class 10. In addition, the chapter formerly titled “Heredity and Evolution” has been changed to just “Heredity.”

Social Studies Chapter Reduction:

The NCERT has modified the science curriculum and eliminated some chapters from the social studies curriculum as well. There are three of these: “Political Parties” (Chapter 6), “Popular Struggles and Movements” (Chapter 5), and “Challenges to Democracy” (Chapter 8). These exclusions are justified in order to reduce the amount of content that students are expected to learn.

Exploring Further:

The NCERT proposes that students who want to study these topics can choose the pertinent subjects in Classes 11 and 12 in order to allay concerns about the chapters that were left out. For instance, those who are interested in the periodic table may opt to study chemistry in the upper grades, while those who are drawn to the ideas of evolution and inheritance may choose to study biology in greater depth.

Final Thoughts:

Recent revisions to the NCERT Class 10 curriculum have raised debates about the possible effects of dropping important concepts like the periodic table and evolution. While the decision intends to lessen the amount of work students have to do while learning during the pandemic, it also raises questions about the depth and scope of their scientific knowledge. Students, parents, and teachers must adjust to these changes while making sure that a thorough comprehension of these subjects is not jeopardized.
