Dr. Ranoj Pegu virtually inaugurated the 69 Tinkering Labs, which were sanctioned the previous year, emphasizing the institute’s role in supporting and executing various educational schemes aimed at transforming Assam’s education system. He encouraged teachers and parents to foster a culture of curiosity and active participation among students.
The primary objective of the event was to showcase the innovative products developed by students from state-run schools as part of the Tinkering Lab program, an initiative led by Samagra Shiksha Assam. Over 230 students from 10 government and 15 private schools across Assam enthusiastically participated in this event. It also highlighted the Education Department’s achievements in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in the state, emphasizing the significance of 21st-century skills programs in schools.
A STEM workshop held during the event allowed more than 230 students from various schools to create their own robots, fostering hands-on learning experiences. The event culminated in a panel discussion where professors from IIT Guwahati and other STEM experts engaged with school principals and teachers, delving into the necessity and challenges of implementing STEM education in schools.
Reflecting on IIT Guwahati’s contribution to Assam’s education sector, Prof. Parameswar K. - Residential Teachers’ Training Programs: The institute designed and conducted residential training programs for over 500 school teachers in Assam. These programs focused on revamping teaching pedagogy and introducing high-quality education at the school level. Teachers were trained in electronics, coding, robotics, AI, 3D printing, and how to operate tinkering labs in the state.
- Quiz Competitions and Olympiads: IIT Guwahati organized quiz competitions and math and science Olympiads for more than 10,000 students across Assam, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and scientific inquiry among students.
- STEM Clubs and Workshops: In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the institute established STEM clubs and conducted workshops in 330 government schools, stimulating creativity, and enhancing technical and scientific skills among students.
- Science Meets: Over 60 research scholars and MTech students from IIT Guwahati conducted science meets and exhibitions in all 33 districts of Assam, popularizing the importance of science and logic in daily life. These theme-specific meetings encouraged students to question, innovate, and apply science and technology to solve real-world problems.
- AROHAN Scheme: IIT Guwahati, under the AROHAN scheme, is set to host meritorious students (mentees) and their guide teachers or officers from 10 districts of Assam. Approximately 1200 students will attend the institute during the first quarter of 2023. They will have the opportunity to explore higher educational institutions in Guwahati and interact with IIT Guwahati’s faculty while gaining valuable insights during their visit.
