MBBS admissions to all of the AIIMS and other Institutes of National Importance will continue to be done through NEET. The decision was made on December 6, 2022 by the AIIMS governing committee, which is chaired by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
The committee deliberated and ultimately ruled against the notion of creating a special undergraduate entrance exam, distinct from NEET, for all AIIMS and other institutes of National Importance. After discussion, it was decided to keep using the current practice of holding a single entrance exam for all medical colleges, according to the meeting minutes, according to a report by PTI.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences was designated as an Institution of National Importance by a Parliamentary Act in 1956. (INI). To demonstrate that a high standard of medical education is feasible in India, Institutes of National Importance (INI) in the field of medicine, beginning with the establishment of AIIMS, are establishing instructional models for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all of its branches (AIIMS Act 1956).
More institutes were later added for undergraduate and graduate education, including PGIMER- Chandigarh, JIPMER, Puducherry (2008), and 21 newly created AIIMS.
An official stated that the Institute of National Importance is responsible for continuously establishing, innovating, and standardizing newer educational approaches at all levels, including the undergraduate, postgraduate, and super specialty programs. These newer initiatives can be used in all medical colleges affiliated with Central, State, Deemed, and State Private Universities.
As a result, in contrast to all other medical institutions in India that fall under its purview, the INI’s medical degree (Schedule under 37) is expressly acknowledged in Section 37 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.
For admission of students to the MBBS program at all AIIMS, the AIIMS New Delhi used to hold an All-India entrance exam in order to choose the most qualified candidates for its undergraduate medical degree (MBBS). “This test was conducted till 2019. The AIIMS MBBS entrance exam was discontinued with the adoption of the NMC Act in 2019, which combined admissions to MBBS seats at all AIIMS with the National Testing Agency’s NEET-UG test. As a result, starting in 2020, the NEET-UG exam will be used to determine admission to MBBS seats at all AIIMS “.
Candidates currently take the INICET PG Exam and INICET SS Exam, both of which are administered by AIIMS New Delhi, to be considered for admission to PG programs and Super Specialty courses at AIIMS.
The National Board of Examinations for Medical Sciences, or NBE, administers the NEET PG and NEET SS exams for admission to various universities. The INICET UG exam has been discontinued for UG admissions, whereas NEET UG has been maintained.
The demand for a separate exam for INIs includes the external factors that have an impact on the NEET Exam significantly. Legal disagreements, challenging logistics, and other issues regularly delay down the exam process. The group in favor of INICET UG said that by holding a separate exam for INIs, students wouldn’t be affected by NEET-related delays.
Every year, at least 16 lakh students take the NEET UG Exam. A total of 80,000 MBBS seats are made accessible to qualified students through the NEET test.
