The yearly celebration of Guru Nanak Jayanti honors the birth anniversary of the Sikhism’s founder, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Every year, people celebrate one of the most significant holidays for the Sikh community.
As to the Hindu lunar calendar, it occurs on a full moon day in the month of Kartik. This year, the holiday will be observed on November 8, a Tuesday, instead of the customary dates in October or November.
Sikhs from all around the world honor the Guru on this day, who was born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, today known as Nanaka Sahib, close to Lahore (in Pakistan). The 553rd anniversary of his birth is being commemorated this year.
The day’s festivities get underway at the Gurudwara with Prabhat Pheris, or early morning processions. The sacred text of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib, is read aloud continuously for 48 hours during the Akhand Path two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti. The Panj Pyaras organize and direct a parade called Nagarkirtan the day before Gurupurab (Five Beloved Ones).
Worshipers recite katha and chant hymns on Gurupurab. A special community supper called langar is then served, which is organized by volunteers at Gurudwaras. Some locations also hold night prayers that start about sunset and go until well into the night.
Around 1:20 am, the actual moment of Guru Nanak’s birth, the assembly begins chanting Gurbani. The celebration comes to an end about 2.00 am in the morning.
On this day, a wholesome lunch is cooked, and then there is a “langar,” which allows followers to do “seva” (offerings/serving). Volunteers make the lunch, which is provided to everyone regardless of caste, religion, or faith.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings and lessons can change your life.
- There is only one true God
There is only one true God. Truth is His name, and He is the Creator. He has no worries and no hatred. He is beyond the cycle of birth and death and therefore never dies. He illuminates himself. He was true at the beginning, at the beginning of the centuries, and he has always been true.
- Kirat Karo i.e., Work Honestly
Whatever type of seed is sowed on a field that has been prepared in appropriate season, a plant of that type, distinguished by the distinctive qualities of the seed, grows up in it.
- The word “Vand Shhakō” means “share and eat.”
“The money that God has given to the people is like a corpse if they hoard it or use it for their own selfish gain, but if they desire to serve it to others, it becomes holy nourishment.”
- Sewa is a term for selfless service
Sing joyful praises to the Lord, honor his name, and take on the role of his slaves.
- Equality
“He is religious who views all men as equals.”
- Honor women
“Why degrade the one who creates the regal kings of the world?”
- God is everywhere
Everything is lit by its brilliance.
- Generosity and sympathy
“He is an ascetic who treats everyone equally, so asceticism is not just words on a page. Visits to cemeteries, aimless roaming, or soaking at holy sites are not examples of asceticism. To practice asceticism is to maintain purity amidst pollutants.”
- Get rid of the five internal evils
According to Guru Nanak Dev Ji, achieving union with the Supreme Being is the key to realizing the purpose of life. However, we are prevented from doing so by five negative aspects of life. Ego, Anger, Greed, Attachment, and Lust were the ones he named. The only way to approach the Divine Being more intimately is by overcoming these vices.
