The 22nd of April is the day we commemorate the wonderful place we all share. But do you know why we celebrate Earth Day in the first place? Earth Day marks the beginning of the contemporary environmental movement that started way back in 1970.
The story behind the celebration:
Gaylord Nelson, a junior senator from Wisconsin, had long expressed worry about the country’s deteriorating ecology. Then, in the January of 1969, he and many others in Santa Barbara, California, witnessed the devastation of a large oil spill. Senator Nelson was inspired by the student anti-war movement and sought to combine the energy of student anti-war rallies with a growing public awareness of air and water pollution. Senator Nelson publicized his plan for a teach-in on college campuses to the national media and enlisted the help of Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, as co-chair. They hired a young activist, Denis Hayes, to coordinate the campus teach-ins, and they chose April 22, a weekday between Spring Break and Final Exams, to maximize student involvement.
Role Green energy in conserving Earth
The term “green energy” refers to energy derived from natural sources such as the sun. Clean energy does not emit pollutants into the atmosphere, whereas renewable energy comes from sources that are constantly replenished, such as hydropower, wind power, or solar power. Renewable energy sources are a clean form of energy that contributes to the reduction of residual waste. The rate of carbon footprints will be reduced as trash, resulting in a greener and cleaner environment.
The country is working to increase the usage of clean energy sources and has already embarked on a number of large-scale sustainable energy projects to assure a substantial increase in green energy production. Also, In the last four years, India has doubled its renewable energy capacity.
Here’s how renewable energy sources will help to protect the environment and conserve the planet we live in:
1) There will be no environmental damage.
The method of extracting energy from renewable sources does not require as much exploitation of the Earth and maybe done quickly without inflicting environmental harm.
2) Carbon emissions are reduced.
Renewable energy sources reduce carbon emissions since they do not require burning or extraction, unlike non-renewable energy sources.
3) Reduces global warming
Most renewable energy sources emit little or no greenhouse gases. Even when they do emit emissions, they are quite minor in nature and have the smallest environmental impact.
4) Reduces negative environmental consequences
Renewable energy sources are a clean source of energy that helps to reduce residual waste. The rate of carbon footprints will be reduced as trash is reduced, resulting in a greener and cleaner environment.
5) Wildlife Protection
Human requirements are always increasing at a quick rate, and as a result, environmental harm is increasing. Using an alternative source of energy will not endanger species or their habitat.
Once we have all of the above in place, our survival story would undoubtedly be a happy one. Though we are all struggling in our own respective ways to survive, a fulfilled, healthy life is something that we can gift each other with. And all of that depends upon the environment we co-exist in.
So let us pledge to make our surroundings clean & green.
