“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.”
– George Sheehan
Everyone wants to be successful in life. However, the infinite connotations attached to success can be quite intimidating. Majority of people who wants success in life aren’t even completely certain as to what success exactly means to them.
Success in its true essence, can be literally anything! It’s doing what you want to do and accomplishing your goals. That said, the next move is to determine the goals in your life because, it’s not as difficult to give success your own definition than it is to have a purpose and goals to fulfill.
How do you see success?
This is the most fundamental yet neglected question when thinking about success in general, “What does success means to me?” As complex it might seem at first, the answer is simple and something that you must be aware about i.e., Success is nothing but living life independently and on your own conditions. It is not merely about money and recognition, but something beyond. The following questions might prod you to think and define success better:
Where do you see yourself in your career?
What if all the jobs and careers in the world had the same pay? Would you still do what you love doing or would follow the most travelled path for money? Well, finding the answer to these questions is how you will plausibly figure out as to where do you see yourself in your career. It’s important to discover what you are passionate about and once you recognize that, try to ascertain whether people are willing to pay for it. As rightly said, the blend of passion and demand should be your dream career.
What type of person you imagine yourself to be, couple of years down the line?
Having had attained success means you are being the person you’ve dreamt of becoming. It’s the sheer ability to look at yourself in the mirror and pat your back while being proud of what you see. If you have a list of qualities that you look up to in your idols then you kind of know the type of person you would like to be. For example, you could admire Steve Jobs for his passion and intellect, and would want to inculcate it. The point here is the person you admire should possess the qualities that you imagine in the type of person you want to be and, once you unveil that, then leave your own trail.
What kind of life do you want to live?
Crafting life, the way you want is a vital part of being successful. Having to ponder upon questions like, “How do you want your day to look?” “What hobbies you want to pursue?” “Where do you want to live?” “Whom do you want to be around?” will shadow upon the answers you are looking for when it comes to the kind of life you want to live. Once you uncover the answers to these questions, you will have greater clarity of what success means to you.
Consider success integrally
Being successful doesn’t necessarily have to do with making money or acquiring material success, it could be as simple as doing what you love, being what you want and living how you wish. Looking at success integrally will allow you to keep on going whilst instilling in you a sense of contentment. Also, the definition you give to your success today might change tomorrow and that’s completely alright! Over time, you might want to change your careers and goals, don’t be afraid of uncertainty then, just follow your heart and do what you feel is right at the moment.
