February 4 has been officially declared as World Cancer Day. The day came into existence at the World Cancer Conference for the new millennium, in Paris, France in the year 2000. Every year since then, people across the world observe World Cancer Day with a different theme to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and to continue to spread awareness on cancer, its prevention, and treatment.
Many of us have lost our near and dear ones, both young and old, to this dreadful disease. It is that one word that brings a shiver down the spine! The theme for world cancer day is a new one each year. And this year it is, ‘close the care gap’. It revolves around identifying and recognizing global disparities in cancer care, that prevent people from certain economic strata from full access to essential healthcare services and facilities. Inequity in cancer care costs lives. Awareness has to be generated within the masses for understanding the care that is needed and also aims at no life is lost!
Cancer is the second leading cause of death, globally. On World Cancer Day, everyone comes together with an agenda to achieve a healthier and brighter world free of cancer. On this day, numerous events are planned, where it is discussed to educate and aware people of cancer and its early detection, treatment, and much more.
A lot of prejudices and misconceptions are attached to this deadly disease. Also, people are still illiterate, in the way, that in many countries people still feel that cancer is contagious. The most unaware lot are school children there are not many schools, globally, that educate children on this particular health issue. Those kids, with no fault of theirs, go about creating their own perceptions that their little mind, offers. The fact is that many small, innocent kids fall victim to cancer. Many a time even their parents are not fully aware of what all goes on when someone is diagnosed with this disease. It is true that cancer can be fatal, but the other side cannot be overlooked either.
If detected on time there are 100% chances of recovery! Of course, there are many visible effects on the body, but one can be cancer-free. The treatment is typical and a lot of compromises are to be made, but if one sees the bright side of life, how amazing would it be if a cancer survivor could lead a long, healthy, fulfilled, and happy life!!
