The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) has warmly welcomed its Y24 batch through an extensive 10-day orientation program curated by the Institute Counselling Service. This program marks the beginning of a new academic journey for over 1,500 postgraduate (PG) students and 1,215 undergraduate (UG) students.

Welcoming Families

A special orientation session was held for the parents of the undergraduate students, totaling over 2,700. This session introduced parents to the academic and administrative framework of IIT Kanpur, as well as the wellness initiatives in place to support their children.

Engaging and Informative Orientation for Students

Throughout the 10-day orientation, students were immersed in a wide range of campus activities, clubs, societies, and functional bodies. These included:

  • Student Gymkhana: The central student body responsible for organizing various events and representing student interests.
  • Gender Cell: A body focused on promoting gender equality and addressing related issues on campus.
  • Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC): A hub for nurturing entrepreneurial ventures and innovative projects.
  • De-addiction Initiatives: Programs aimed at helping students overcome addiction and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Internships and Industry-Academia Collaborations: Opportunities for students to gain practical experience and work with industry leaders.
  • Technopark: A space dedicated to technological advancements and research.
  • Student-Exchange Programs: Partnerships with foreign universities to offer students international exposure.
  • Cyber Security Measures: Ensuring a safe and secure online environment for all campus activities.

Institute counsellors played a crucial role in guiding students through these transitions, helping them acclimate to the new environment.

Faculty Guide Network Revived

This year, IIT Kanpur has reintroduced its Faculty Guide network, with approximately 85 faculty members volunteering to mentor students. Each Faculty Guide is assigned to around 30 UG and PG students, providing continuous support throughout their academic journey. The Faculty Guides will assist students in navigating campus life, making course adjustments, understanding institutional rules, engaging in co-curricular activities, exploring career opportunities, and staying updated on recent trends.

Anti-Ragging Measures

To ensure a safe and welcoming environment, IIT Kanpur has established a central Anti-Ragging Committee to oversee and enforce anti-ragging regulations. Each residential hall also has its own unit working in tandem with the central committee to maintain a harassment-free campus. Senior students are assigned to guide and support small groups of new students, ensuring their smooth transition into campus life.

Enhancing Student Experience

The orientation program at IIT Kanpur is designed to ensure that new students feel welcomed, supported, and well-prepared for their academic journey. By introducing them to the various aspects of campus life, providing mentorship, and fostering a sense of community, IIT Kanpur aims to create a nurturing environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.

Closing Thoughts

The comprehensive orientation program at IIT Kanpur not only helps students and their families acclimate to the new environment but also sets the stage for a successful and enriching academic experience. With a focus on support, engagement, and community-building, IIT Kanpur continues to uphold its commitment to excellence in education and student welfare.
