EMPATHY

So what is this word, empathy, that is seen in almost all the areas of life?

This is an attribute that has the qualities to convert mud to gold. The human heart is so complete and supremely whole that it can aid us in attaining pure bliss. It is not an easy task to be able to connect with people from various walks of life. Now many of you would be wondering as to why is it even important to connect with others!

Well, there is a need to do so because in order to be the best friend or the best boss you have got to be able to relate to the emotional psyche of others. It is a tool that is being widely used in schools, colleges, and even the corporate sector. A boss/head in an esteemed organization will never be able to make a place in the hearts of their team members if empathy is lacking. No matter how experienced, or technically sound one may be, the impact will never occur.

Once upon a time, there was a little boy, Alfred who stayed at a farm. His next-door neighbor, Mr.Griffin had 6 puppies that he wanted to put up for sale. When Alfred got to know of this he went straight to Mr.Griffins and spread out all the coins that he had ever saved. All he wanted in return was a puppy who could play with him, love him and be his best buddy. Mr. Griffin was happy to see the desperation of the little boy and so he decided to show all of the puppies and so he opened the gates of the doghouse and there came those 5 bundles of joy. They were playing and running with all their mighty vigor.  Alfred pressed his face against the chain-link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the puppies made their way to the fence, Alfred noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly, another ball of fur appeared, this one significantly smaller. It had an awkward walk but down it slid to the rest of the puppies, hobbling towards them and trying to catch up.

“I want that one,” Alfred blurted, pointing to the tiniest and the last one that strutted out the doghouse. Mr. Griffin shouted out loud and replied, “son you wouldn’t want that one. For he will never be able to run and play like the other dogs. With that, the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, “you see sir, I don’t run too well myself, and the puppy that I chose will need someone to understand the same.

Tears rolled down the farmer’s cheek and he immediately handed over the puppy to Alfred.

This sweet little short story is a perfect example of empathy. So, apparently, empathy is the connection that is made only when you are actually or literally able to feel what the other person is going through.
