The counselling process for admission to prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) has commenced following the release of JEE Advanced 2024 results. This year, students are navigating through 865 different branches across 121 colleges, making crucial decisions based on their JEE-Main 2024 and JEE-Advanced 2024 ranks. A significant aspect of this year’s counselling is the deadline for choice filling, which is set for June 18.

Changes in Branch Change Policies

In 2024, several prominent IITs and NITs have decided to discontinue branch change options based on first-year performance. Previously, many students strategically opted for lower branches in top-tier institutions with the hope of upgrading to their preferred branch later. However, institutions like IIT Mumbai, Madras, Kharagpur, and others, alongside 16 NITs including Jaipur, Calicut, and Warangal, have closed this avenue. This change has a direct impact on how students prioritize their choices during counselling.

Seat Allocation and Growth

This year’s counselling aims to fill a total of 59,917 seats across various institutes. This includes 17,740 seats in 23 IITs, 24,229 seats in 32 NITs, 8,546 seats in 26 IIITs, and 9,402 seats in 40 GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes). Compared to the previous year, there has been an increase of 355 seats in IITs, 275 seats in NITs, 800 seats in IIITs, and 1,335 seats in GFTIs, totaling an increment of 2,765 seats overall.

Impact on Student Priority Lists

Traditionally, students often prioritized lower branches in prestigious institutions over core branches in lesser-known counterparts, banking on the possibility of switching based on academic performance. With the branch change options now closed in several key institutions, students are compelled to rethink their strategies. This shift is likely to influence how they finalize their priority lists during the counselling process.

Closing Thoughts

The JoSSA counselling process for 2024 marks a pivotal moment for aspiring engineers across India. With changes in branch change policies and an increased number of seats, students face new challenges and opportunities in securing their desired academic paths. As the deadline for choice filling approaches, the decisions made by these students will shape their academic journey and future career prospects in engineering.
