‘If I had the power over Indian journals, I would have had the following lines printed in bold: “Milk for the infants, food for the adults, and Education for all.’ – Lala Lajpat Rai

January 28, witnesses the birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter that fought for Indian peace and harmony. Lala Lajpat Rai, who sent shivers down the spines of the trouble makers, was not only a revolutionary, but also a philosopher, writer, banker, social reformer, and a reputed lawyer. On this day in 1865 in Ferozpur, he was born. He is renowned and honored as the ‘Lion of Punjab’ or ‘Punjab Kesari. At a very young age, Lalaji demonstrated the qualities of a fearless man. Today marks the 151st birth anniversary of this prominent leader.

His doings revolutionized Bharat…

He is also known for being a part of the famous ‘Lal-Bal-Pal’ trio of militant commanders including him, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandra Pal. He was an outspoken supporter of India’s Swadeshi movement, which called for a boycott of all imported items in favor of Indian-made ones. In the 1980s, Lalaji was also connected to the Punjab National Bank and the Lakshmi Insurance Company, which is still regarded as an outstanding banking alternative by a large number of Indians, demonstrating his passion for self-help and enterprise in India. Also, to prevent Christian missions from gaining custody of orphans, he formed the Hindu Orphan Relief Movement.

Not only this but Rai also wrote a large number of novels. Some of the publications he wrote include ‘History of the Arya Samaj,’ ‘England’s Debt to India: India, The Problems Of National Education In India,’ ‘Swaraj and Social Change,’ and ‘The United States of America: A Hindu’s Impressions and a Study.’

He died a hero.

In 1928, Lala Lajpat Rai organized a nonviolent parade to protest the arrival in Lahore of the Simon Commission, which had been appointed to advocate constitutional reform in India under British control. To put an end to the protests, then-Superintendent of Police Scott authorized a ‘lathi-charge’ against all of the activists. During this argument, the cops struck Lala Lajpat Rai in the chest and specifically targeted him. Unfortunately, on November 17, Rai died as a result of the altercation. Bhagat Singh and his associates attempted to assassinate Scott in retaliation. Instead, they mistakenly killed JP Saunders, an Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Why Lala Lajpat Rai was named Punjab Kesari…

Lala Lajpat Rai was a key figure in the anti-British non-cooperation movement, which began in response to the Rowlatt Act. The British enacted the Rowlatt Act in order to imprison any Indian who threatened to cause them to harm through their protests. Lala Lajpat Rai was granted the title of ‘Punjab Kesari’ in Punjab for his bravery in resisting the new legislation (the lion of Punjab).

Lala Lajpat Rai left a legacy of patriotism, togetherness, and power behind him. He was a staunch supporter of India’s independence and devoted his entire life to the cause.

On the 151st anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai’s birth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to him. Modi said Lala Lajpat Rai was admired for his “fearlessness, spotless integrity, and struggle against injustice,” as he paid tribute to the statesman who is known for his contribution to the Independence movement. Arun Jaitley, the Union Finance Minister, and Rahul Gandhi, the Vice-President of the Indian National Congress, both tweeted their condolences to the great leader of India’s independence movement.
