The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is one of India’s most esteemed medical institutions, renowned for its high standards of medical education, world-class faculty, and cutting-edge research facilities. Established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, AIIMS is a dream destination for every medical aspirant in the country. While the institute initially started with a single campus in New Delhi, over the years, it has expanded to multiple cities across the country. AIIMS now operates in 15 different locations, with each offering a significant number of MBBS seats. As of today, AIIMS collectively offers over 1,200 MBBS seats, making it one of the largest medical institutions for undergraduate medical education in India.

This blog provides an in-depth look at AIIMS, including seat allocation, admission processes, and the overall significance of AIIMS as a medical institution.

AIIMS: A Legacy of Excellence

The journey of AIIMS began in 1956 with the establishment of AIIMS New Delhi, the flagship institute. Over the decades, AIIMS New Delhi has become synonymous with excellence in medical care, research, and education. Recognizing the need for more institutions of similar quality, the government of India established AIIMS in various states to decentralize healthcare services and education.

Currently, there are a total of 25 AIIMS, with 20 being operational and the remaining 5 upcoming.

Admission Process for MBBS in AIIMS

The admission process for MBBS in AIIMS is highly competitive and is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Until 2019, AIIMS used to conduct its own entrance examination, but the AIIMS MBBS exam was merged with NEET as per the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to the admission process:

  1. Eligibility Criteria:
    • Candidates must have completed their Class 12th or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as compulsory subjects.
    • A minimum aggregate of 50% marks (for General and OBC candidates) or 40% marks (for SC/ST/PwD candidates) is required in the qualifying examination.
    • The age of the candidate must be 17 years as of December 31st of the year of admission.
  2. NEET-UG Examination:
    • The NEET-UG is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
    • The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), out of which candidates need to attempt only 180. The questions cover Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (including Botany and Zoology).
    • NEET-UG is conducted in a single session, and the duration of the exam is 3 hours.
  3. AIIMS Cutoff:
    • The cutoff rank to secure an MBBS seat in AIIMS varies based on the institution and category of the candidate.
    • For AIIMS New Delhi, the cutoff is typically higher than other AIIMS campuses, and students need to secure top ranks in NEET-UG to get admission here.
  4. Counseling and Seat Allotment:
    • After the results of NEET-UG are declared, candidates are required to participate in the AIIMS MBBS counseling process.
    • The counseling is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) based on the NEET-UG score.
    • During the counseling sessions, candidates are allotted seats in different AIIMS campuses based on their NEET rank, preference, and availability of seats.
