Every year on February 28, India observes National Science Day to recognize the contributions made by scientists to the nation’s progress.
On this day in 1930, renowned Indian scientist CV Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing the “Raman Effect.” He received the Bharat Ratna from the Indian government in 1954.

Dr. CV Raman was a well-known scientist who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from Madras’ Presidency College. He took part in several science competitions in addition to his job for the government. After that, the Indian government awarded him a scholarship.
What Do You Mean by the Raman Effect?
The Raman Effect takes place when molecules bend light rays, changing the wavelength. The light that passes through a transparent, dust-free sample of a chemical compound occasionally departs in directions other than the incident (incoming) beam. A large portion of this scattered light has a constant wavelength. But, a small percentage of it has wavelengths that are different from those of the incident light; this is because of the Raman Effect.
History behind the National Science Day
The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) approached the Government of India in 1986 with a request to designate February 28 as National Science Day. The day was then recognized as National Science Day by the government. On February 28, 1987, the first National Science Day was observed.

‘Global Science for Global Wellbeing’ is the theme of National Science Day in 2023.

For the purpose of promoting science’s significance, National Science Day is observed. Educational institutions host lectures, discussions, quiz contests, science exhibitions on themes and concepts, radio and television broadcasts, science movies, science model displays, and radio and television programs to honor National Science Day.
