Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first education minister, was born on November 11, and today, November 11, is National Education Day in India. This day is observed to recognize and honour Maulana Azad’s contribution to the nation’s educational system.  

Who was Maulana Abul Kalam Azad?

Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad was a fighter for Indian independence, reformer, writer, and head of the Indian National Congress. He was born on November 18, 1888. Following India’s independence, Kalam was chosen as the country’s minister of education by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Great liberation warrior Maulana Azad was also an advocate for revamping and altering India’s educational system. He significantly contributed to the development of the Indian educational system. He was a fervent supporter of women’s education as well. He deserves credit for putting in place the contemporary educational system.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) built the nation’s first IIT in 1951 under Azad’s direction. The University Grants Commission (UGC) was established in 1953 as a result. He thought that these organizations will play a significant role in the future of higher education. During his administration, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the higher education system were also founded. It is also admirable that he helped found the renowned Jamia Millia Islamia University in the nation.

National Education Day: A Historical Overview

In honour of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Indian government designated November 11 as National Education Day in 2008. Since then, this day has been observed by all schools and academic institutions through a variety of engaging and instructional seminars, simple writing contests, and rallies, among other activities. On this day, educational institutions and government agencies spread awareness of the value of literacy and the nation’s commitment to educating all social strata.
