“By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions,

one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination.”

– Christopher Columbus

One of the many challenges faced during exam time is to control the distractions, especially, the ones caused by the mobile phones. The surge in students’ social engagements and with the notifications exploding, it’s quite hard to stray away from the interruptions. However, if one is determined and serious towards one’s goals, there’s always a way out to not let anything fall in between. Planning study hours wisely is the chief component in staying focused while preparing for exams.

Here are few suggestions that could help in restraining distractions:

  • Keep your vision and goals in mind: Knowing your ultimate goal will not only help you to devote yourself to studies better but will also aid you in staying focused, which will further help you to stand back from disruptions.
  • Decide social media time: Set a specific time in a day wherein you’d incorporate all your social media activities. For say, 30 minutes, twice a day can be used to check notifications and keep pace with the current affairs during exams.
  • Set a deadline: Have a well-laid out plan for studies. If you’ve decided to study for long hours, fix your mind accordingly. One you are in the midst of the flow, fix a stipulated period of time and when the time has lapsed, stop then and there. It’s much easier to stay focused without losing concentration when you have an end in sight.
  • Keep your phone on silent: Put your phone on silent mode during exam days, so as not to get disrupted by the frequent notification sounds. Don’t let anything break your flow of learning.
  • Use the phone only in- between breaks: Permit yourself to have a little mobile time in-between the breaks you take whilst studying. Take a rest of 15 mins, check your notifications, grab your favourite snack, walk a little and get back to the grind all pumped up.
  • Turn off the mobile data: One of the best ways to step away from the mobile disruption is to switch off the mobile data which will not only help you in concentrating better but will also keep the unwanted notifications trapped while you’re preparing for your exams.
  • Keep your phone away: You can often feel unfocussed or can have an urge to check your phone frequently if it’s in your view. In order to avoid that, you can position the phone out of your sight in another room or on your closet shelf, etc.

There are ocean of distractions that surround us and apparently, it’s not going to go anywhere. Therefore, the key is to conquer them. Learning how not to get distracted is more easily said than done. But there are ways that could be incorporated into our daily lives, enabling us to limit the distractions. Maybe, by merely preparing our minds to stay on track and not get pulled away by anything that stands before our goals, can go a long way.
